Binary means two. The 0 and 1 are two basic binary numbers. the binary number system uses only two digits 0 and 1. All the numbers in binary number system are sequence of 0s and 1s. The base or radix of binary number system is two.
For example, following are some valid binary numbers.
0
1
0010
1111
0010 0111
0011 1100 1010 0011
Observe that a binary number can consist if any number of digits but all the digits are either 0 or 1.
The binary numbers are important, because in computers the data is represented in the form of binary numbers. Computer is a digital electronic machine consisting of transistors. these transistor are swithing devices which have only two states, either ON or OFF. ON represent 1 while OFF state represents 0.
The number and characters are internally represented in the form of binary numbers.
For example, number 553 may be represented as,
The number and characters are internally represented in the form of binary numbers.

0101 0101 0011
Every binary digit '0' or '1' is called binary bit. A group of four binary bits is called nibble. A group of eight binary bits is called one byte. Byte is smaller unit. Normally we use higher unit such as Kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabytes.
